Chapter 12: "Fast Ramp" Activity This is a group activity after students have learned how to evaluate functions. Groups pick a function they want for their ramp and then have to evaluate the parts of the function. Finally they have to determine relationships between linear and quadratic functions. 1. Tricked Out Ramp Worksheet (each students completes this) 2. Tricked Out Ramps Presentation (with Functions for Groups to Choose) 3. Samples of "Walk Around" once all posters are done. Students look at each other's posters to determine a relationship between the graphs. 4. Samples of Answers to #4-6 of WS
Chapter 3: Uses for Equations: Envelope Problems You can give these individually or in groups. I have students solve them in groups as a competition against other groups. Students must determine how much money is in each envelope! You can use this as a pre and post activity. Students use guess and check in the beginning, then equations at the end. Hopefully they start realizing how helpful equations can really be :) Hint: If students have trouble solving, you can have them draw the envelopes and label them. Post: Once students get used to the word problems, give them equations and have them make up their own envelope problems. Sample 1 Vanessa has three children named Johnny, Tim, and Jenny. They are great children, so for Christmas she gives them all an envelope with the same amount of money. Tim fails a class, so Vanessa decides to fine him $20. Jenny and Johnny brought home straight A’s, so Vanessa gave each of them an extra $30. All together Vanessa gave out $340. How was in each of the Christmas envelopes? Add on Question: How much money did she give to each student? Sample 2 Chinese New Years It is Chinese New Year and Kai Lan is the matriarch of her family tree. It is tradition for the matriarch to give each child under the age of 18 an envelope with money. All the children 13 and older get an extra $20 in their envelope. There are 10 children between the ages of 1 and 12 and 15 children between the ages of 13 and 18. Kai Lan used a total of $1425. How much did the younger children get? How much did the older children get? Sample 3 Happy Birthday Scott has two grandchildren, Mia (3 years old) and Jessica (1 year old). When Mia was born, Scott gave her two envelopes, one having twice as much as the first. Each year he places $100 in each of the envelopes. When Jessica was born, Scott gave her only one envelope with three times the amount of Mia’s original smalle envelope. On her first birthday, he gave her $100. If he has given a total of $1210 to the girls, how much was in each of the original envelopes?
